The value of a persons hair and the Fear of the LORD...

Today I was in Acts 27:33-34. Paul tells everyone on the ship he is on that the ship and cargo will be lost but every soul on board will be saved. He got this divinely by an Angel who shared it with him, and he used this to encourage the 276 souls on board. To do this Paul said, “No one of you shall lose a hair from your head.”

This got me thinking about the hair on my head personally and when Jesus tells us that His disciples (My friends) should be fearless (Luke 12:4, 7; cf. 32) because God would take care of them. Jesus says:

Luke 12:7 (ESV)

Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Jesus’ point was don’t fear men who can harm their bodies (Luke 11:48-50) but God, the One who has the power to throw one in hell. The other point is since God takes care of the most insignificant and inconsequential little bird, how much more He will take care of you. God cares for His own, even knowing the number of hairs on their head.

Thinking about that, I did a Google search on “how much hair does a person lose over a lifetime” and it gives these results:

On average, a person sheds between 50 and 100 hairs per day from just the 100,000 hair follicles on their scalp.

Each individual hair on your head grows from between 2 to 7 years before falling out and growing a new one.

I don’t think about my hair until it needs managing after a shower, or when my scalp itches, needs cutting or I take off a hat. Seriously, I don’t focus on my hair very often considering what I put my thoughts on day to day. Shaving is more daily than the hair on my head and yet, God knows every hair no matter where. Why? What is there about the intrinsic value of a person made in the image of God?

David says, “I am beautifully and wonderfully made.” Wonder, Awe, Amazed…! Truly inspiring a “Fear of the LORD!” God knows the hair on my head and everywhere else for that matter. Why would it even matter to God? Why would He care? I don’t have the foggiest notion of the value of a person to God, that He would care to know the number of hairs on my head let alone every person on the planet, but He does. It is staggering to think about Him knowing such detail and valuing it. That God knows when I lose a hair, and when it is replaced. And further still, that I am of such value to Him that He cares to know.

If I think about what I value about myself, I dare any of us would think about out hair unless we are losing it and don’t want to. But at all times, my Creator knows, and, in His Wisdom, He values me so much that He knows the hairs on my head, and nothing will ever happen to me or them unless in His Wisdom, He permits it. My response is Awe. My response is the Fear of the Lord. My response to God is like Job, I don’t understand His wisdom, yet I am of great value to Him, and I will by faith, trust that God is in control. That He is Sovereignly working the circumstances of my life wisely for Michael’s good and in response I reject evil and live in accordance with God’s standards of holiness.

What else can I do?
